Holiday in the Rain

I wrote this ages ago for LiveABC: http://golive.liveabc.com/epaper/2008/09/rain.htm. I complained about the title, Laowai Speaks English, because people aren't really comfortable with the expression "laowai," which means "white foreigner" in Chinese. It has a negative connotation; though many do use it kind of mindlessly or unintentionally, I suppose as our grandparents may have said "Chinaman."

The Chinese editors changed Laowai Speaks English to A Foreigner's Life in Taiwan. This was all eagerly explained to me by the English (from America) editor. I was looking at the Chinese as she brought the new, English title to my attention. You'll see the characters 老外 remained at the top of the page. Translated, they are "laowai."

Anyway, I still think the story is cute.

全民英檢一路通初級

A GEPT textbook, elementary level, from the series I wrote for Crane Publishing. It's coming up for a new run this fall, I think.
